In 2018, the state of Michigan received $16 million in federal funds to help reduce Opioid use and abuse. The funding was given to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and was earmarked for promoting prevention and increasing access to treatment by funding state initiatives like The Michigan Automated Prescription System, medication assisted treatment, improving the availability of Naloxone, development of a statewide awareness program, and collaboration with university partners on reentry, evaluation, and research opportunities.

The Kent County Board of Commissioners accepted a $193,000 grant to provide the necessary resources for defendants in the court system who are suffering from a mental illness. A mental health court was instituted in January 2018 to treat people who are diagnosed with a mental illness by a physician. This includes individuals with substance use disorders. The goal of the court is to ensure defendants take their withdrawal medications and will be able to obtain counseling in order to integrate themselves back into society without returning to Opioid misuse.
