In Trenton and Mercer County, there were 49 fatal overdoses in just the first four months of the year. As the crisis worsens, authorities in the city are beginning to dedicate more resources to saving lives from Opioids. In 2018, the federal government gave New Jersey $30.6 million to fund initiatives to prevent overdoses and open more recovery centers in Trenton and throughout the state. The state government has contributed an additional $100 million to the fight against Opioids, and in Mercer County, the police have begun to send individuals who use Opioids to intensive drug treatment facilities rather than to jail. The New Jersey Department of Health is even considering allowing individuals who use Opioids to manage their addiction with medical Marijuana, which is legal in New Jersey, although there is currently no licensed dispensary in Trenton.
