Drug and Alcohol Addiction In Trenton, New Jersey
Trenton is the capital city of New Jersey, the county seat of Mercer County, and the tenth-largest city in the state with a population of about 84,000 people. This city is an on-going battleground in the national Opioid epidemic and faces challenges with drug trafficking. Out of the 13 cities throughout Mercer County, Trenton has the highest rates of substance abuse treatment admissions. The main substances that individuals sought treatment for include Heroin, alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine, and other Opioids.
Many local organizations have formed in the city to help combat the increasing rates of drug abuse and correlated public health concerns. These services including supportive housing, employment services, and some outpatient facilities. Traveling beyond the city of Trenton, however, may be necessary for finding the right treatment facility to start the road to recovery.
Opioid Addiction In Trenton
In 2018, Opioid and Heroin overdoses claimed the lives of over 700 people in New Jersey by the month of August. In Trenton and Mercer County, there were 49 fatal overdoses in just the first four months of the year. According to the New Jersey state government, there were 2,750 fatal Opioid overdoses in New Jersey in 2017, about half of which involved Fentanyl, an Opioid even more potent than Heroin. The Opioid epidemic in New Jersey is so serious that 44% of Trenton residents who sought treatment for addiction in 2017 sought treatment for Opioid and Heroin addiction, while 26% sought treatment for alcohol abuse.
As the crisis worsens, authorities in the city are beginning to dedicate more resources to saving lives from Opioids. In 2018, the federal government gave New Jersey $30.6 million to fund initiatives to prevent overdoses and open more recovery centers in Trenton and throughout the state. The state government has contributed an additional $100 million to the fight against Opioids, and in Mercer County, the police have begun to send individuals who use Opioids to intensive drug treatment facilities rather than to jail. The New Jersey Department of Health is even considering allowing individuals who use Opioids to manage their addiction with medical Marijuana, which is legal in New Jersey, although there is currently no licensed dispensary in Trenton.
