Drug And Alcohol Addiction In Toledo, Ohio

The state of Ohio is currently suffering from some of the highest rates of substance abuse and overdose in the country, and the city of Toledo is no different. Thousands of local residents are in urgent need of rehab, but the majority will not get the treatment that they need. However, hope is out there. Both local and remote treatment centers are available to help Toledo residents get started on the road to recovery.

Cocaine Rise Spotted In Toledo

Over the past decade, a rise in availability of powdered and Crack Cocaine has been spotted by the Ohio Substance Abuse Monitoring Network (OSAM). The National Forensic Laboratory Information System (NFLIS) recorded 707 Cocaine cases within 6 months, coming from Toledo, with 27.2% coming out of Lucas County alone.

In a Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted by the Ohio Department of Health, 3.8% of high school students surveyed reported trying some form of Cocaine in their lives. This number has been predicted to naturally increase over time as population and availability of Cocaine grows.

Heroin And Other Opioids In Toledo, Ohio

Despite this increase in Cocaine, OSAM has identified Heroin and prescription Opioids as in-demand. Fentanyl, a prescription pain reliever, is used to cut with Cocaine and has been involved in many cases. From a sample of OSAM-reported cases prescription Opioid use, 44% involved fentanyl. YRBS reported that 12.8% of students in Ohio had admitted to using a painkiller without a prescription; students with a disability have been nearly twice as likely to abuse a prescription drug.

The market for prescription drugs is constantly in flux based off availability. Heroin filled in as a cheaper alternative for many going through withdrawals. Heroin has been more readily available throughout the years, and was involved in at least 728 cases in Toledo in a 6-month period.

Prescription drug use was the highest abuse among high school students, which makes them more likely to turn to Heroin later.

Toledo has attempted to hold the manufacturers and distributors responsible for “alleged fraudulent and negligent marketing and distribution of prescription drugs.” Toledo firefighters have been endowed with at least $400,000 of taxpayer money to respond to Opioid-related emergencies.
