Drug And Alcohol Addiction In Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky is no stranger to the drug epidemic plaguing America. Heroin and Fentanyl are widely abused in the state, deeply concerning government officials. Methamphetamine abuse in Louisville is increasing in high numbers as police charge thousands of people in Meth drug busts. Each year, Kentucky loses over 1,000 lives to substance abuse, many in the Louisville area. With numbers on the incline since 2011, Jefferson County, home to Louisville and other cities, mourns the highest number of drug-related overdoses in the state.

While there are limited treatment facilities in the immediate area, there are many in surrounding regions that specialize in various forms of addiction and abuse rehab and recovery services.

Opioids: The Most Dangerous Drugs In Louisville

Opioids are claiming the lives of more Louisville residents than any other drugs, with Heroin and Fentanyl at the forefront. The city of Louisville has endured overdose fatality rates (with Opioids at the core) of 43 deaths per 100,000 natives, which is “double the national rate.”

Many individuals suffering Opioid abuse begin after using prescription medication. While medications like Oxycodone and Hydrocodone provide pain relief, they also produce euphoric feelings and are highly addictive. Even those who carefully follow prescription instructions can become dependent on the chemicals, and those who don’t are more likely to become addicted. Individuals suffering from an Opioid addiction often later transition to cheaper and more accessible, but also more dangerous drugs.Heroin is one of the most sought out substances when individuals transition to illicitly produced Opioids. It is readily available on streets for as low as $10 per bag.

Overdose deaths in Louisville nearly doubled from one year to the next from 379 in 2019 to 603 in 2020. Jefferson County saw 508 overdose deaths in 2021 plus an additional 81 pending cases. Considering the increased popularity (and deadly nature) of Fentanyl, officials speculate it to be a main contributor to the rapid incline as drug dealers have started lacing their products with the chemical as a way to keep their costs down.

Officials believe the onset and continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased numbers of drug overdose deaths—specifically in adolescents. While overdose fatality rates for the state as a whole increased by 49% from 2020 to 2021, the percentage of people aged 15-24 rose by 90% as 127 young people died of a drug overdose.
