Drug and Alcohol Addiction In Stuart, Florida
A relatively small town with a population around 16,000 people (as captured by the US Census), Stuart, Florida is the county seat of Martin County. Like any other town, Stuart struggles with various addictions, including alcohol and other substances. The biggest problem they face comes from the opioid epidemic.
With 88 dead from drug-related causes in 2016, more than any previous year, more are feeling the effects of the opioid crisis in Martin County and Stuart than ever before. Fortunately, there are resources and treatment centers nearby to find help and support.
Overdoses In Stuart
At 88 lives claimed, deaths by overdoses in Martin County in 2016 were greater than the past two years combined. That, however, doesn’t paint the whole picture. In 2013, Martin County administered 76 doses of Naloxone, a drug that can reverse an opioid overdose. By 2015, that number tripled to 272 doses. Not only have more lives been lost, but an even greater number of people are facing near-death experiences.
Martin County has administered so much Naloxone, $8,160 alone in 2015, that the county’s budget is being run down. So much Naloxone has been administered, that a Martin County Commissioner has proposed a limit on how much Naloxone can be administered to one person.
Interpreting The Data In Stuart
In 2016, Martin County saw 88 drug-related deaths. While this number pales in comparison to the thousands that other counties and cities are seeing, it is actually much worse. First of all, that number was more than three times the amount of deaths from the year prior’s 26. Second, Martin County’s low population means that roughly 56 out of every 100,000 are dying of overdose or some drug-related cause. This is over double the national average.
The Martin County Sheriff’s department report that the number in 2016 were a spike from the year before, and they continue to climb. Until proper light is shed on this area’s difficulties with substances, deaths will continue to climb.
Designer Drugs In Stuart
New designer drugs are sweeping across South Florida, Stuart Included. Synthetic opioids, like new blends and Fentanyl-analogues, are killing more and more people each day. “Grey Death,” a blend of Heroin with several synthetic opioids, has popped up in Martin County and is killing users left and right. Even those who think they’re taking more common drugs, like Heroin, are actually being given Fentanyl or Carfentanil (another synthetic opioid, more powerful than Fentanyl). While this allows dealers to keep their prices down, it is costing unaware users their lives.
