Drug And Alcohol Addiction In Bridgeport, Connecticut

Bridgeport, Connecticut boasts a rich historical and industrial past, but as industries left the city, drugs and drug related crime began to take their place. To this day, Bridgeport struggles to control the rates of drug abuse and crime in the city.

Opioids In Bridgeport

Bridgeport’s primary drug issue centers around opioids. The city saw a slight increase in opioid related deaths from 51 in 2017, to 58 in 2018. A report on drug overdoses in Fairfield (Bridgeport’s county) reveals that 90% of all overdose cases in the area are linked to prescription Opioids and illegal drugs like Heroin and Fentanyl. As the largest city in the county, Bridgeport represents nearly 40% of the countywide Opioid related deaths. City and medical officials think part of this problem centers around perception. When asked about the recent uptick in opioid overdoes he’s seen, Dr. Michael Werdmann, called out the unrealistic ideas that still surrounds opioid abuse in his city.

They still have that kind of image, that it’s an urban or an inner-city problem, and what this suggests is that it’s an everywhere problem,”.

- Dr. Michael Werdmann, New Haven Register, 2019

Opioids in the city find support through their steady supply. Bridgeport represents one of the larger drug trafficking cities in CT. I-95 runs very close to the city, and communities situated on large routes unfortunately see more drug movement than others.

Alcohol In Bridgeport

While not as problematic as opioids, alcohol still represents a serious issue. In the Bridgeport metro area almost 35% of roadway fatalities involve alcohol. Drunk driving is a problem facing Connecticut as a whole, but Bridgeport’s misuse of alcohol is the most serious in the state.

Fighting Addiction in Bridgeport

In 2018, Bridgeport and other Connecticut communities spoke up against the worsening Opioid epidemic. Former addicts, healthcare specialists, and politicians gathered to create a plan to combat the addiction itself and the surrounding stigma. A grant of $250,000 was give to United Way of Connecticut to improve availability of information and treatment in the state.

Bridgeport made a similar push specifically for the opioid issue in its city. A large effort was launched to change the perception of substance abuse from a crime problem to a public health issue. Instead of focusing on drug dealers and trafficking, official meetings began looking toward helping people who find themselves addicted to drugs in Bridgeport.

Treatment Options

With recent efforts, Bridgeport has expanded the options for addicts in the city. Many rehab facilities offer inpatient and outpatient treatment depending on what stage of the healing process addicts find themselves in.

Some facilities focus specifically on opioid abuse, offering services like Methadone detox and other medication-assisted treatments. Other treatment facilities offer multiple programs for different abuse issues.

There are also options available for treatment structure. Many rehab options focus on spirituality and religion, using approaches like the 12-step program to help addicts. Some simply rely on intensive outpatient programs to maintain consistent therapy, while not necessarily focusing on a higher power.

Whatever substance issue you or a loved one may be facing, know that help is available. Acknowledging the problem and reaching out takes tremendous courage and strength. For more information on treatment, contact a treatment provider today.
