Drug And Alcohol Addiction In Corpus Christi, Texas

At just over 325,000 people Corpus Christi, Texas, contains 90% of the population of Nueces County. Despite this being far fewer people than the millions living between San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Austin, there is a greater concentration of Opioid deaths per capita within Nueces County.

Deaths By Opioids In Corpus Christi

In 2019, Corpus Christi and Nueces County experienced 39 overdose deaths and 11 that involved Opioids. By comparison, there are more actual deaths in Bexar and Harris Counties, the rates per 100,000 people were only 5.9 and 5.2 respectively.

The state death rate from opioids in 2015 was only 4.3 per 100,000 people, less than half that of Nueces County. To put this in perspective, if the death rate of Corpus Christi and Nueces County was applied to the rest of Texas, there would have been 2,855 deaths, as opposed to the actual 1,174.

This doesn’t just impact the people who have become addicted, be it through illicit or prescription Opioids, but children as well. A lawsuit being filed against Opioid manufacturers in Corpus Christie states that Nueces County is regularly in the top five counties for newborns that are hospitalized with symptoms of Opioid withdrawal. These are infants that have developed an addiction while still in the womb and will need costly medical care to not only survive infancy but go on to live functional lives.

Drug Arrests In Corpus Christi

In recent years, while the State rate of drug abuse violations fell 9.1%, it increased in Nueces County by 2.96%. That brought the total up to 11.82 per 1,000 people, or over 4,000 people. Given this increase, it is fair to say that drug traffic increased as well. Meaning that there is a growing chance of people developing an addiction to some form of opioid.

Prescription Opioids And Heroin In Corpus Christi

People hear overdose and tend to think of Heroin. However, a majority of the cases across the country and the state of Texas are actually from prescription opioids. In fact, in recent years, the number of deaths from heroin and prescribed Opioids nearly tied, with a difference of 516 to 517, respectively. There is slight overlap in these two categories, as well other synthetic Opioids, but the majority seem to be exclusive of each other.
