Drug And Alcohol Addiction In Garland, Texas
Garland is a Texas city that makes up about 9% of the greater Dallas County’s population. Although Garland is less than a fifth of the size of nearby Dallas, it is home to nearly 300,000 people. Garland is experiencing the devastating effects of the Opioid epidemic and other dangerous substances.
Synthetic Marijuana In Garland
Similar to what has happened in Austin, Garland and Dallas County have seen a growth in people overdosing from synthetic Marijuana. Despite it being outlawed, new blends are hitting the streets. In many cases, synthetic Marijuana can cause people to fall catatonic, induce seizures, bleed profusely, or even die.
While it seemed that the crisis was getting better, recent years saw a rampant increase in the number of calls from the previous year. At 8.1 calls per 100,000 people, there were over 200 calls within Dallas County. After making it illegal, the number of calls to poison centers fell in 2016 to a flat 98. However, from January to September of 2017, the number shot up to its highest at 271 calls, a 177% increase.
Opioids In Garland
In 2019, Dallas County saw 163 overdoses with opioid-related causes. While this rate is lower than much of the country, it is one of the highest rates in Texas. There were overall 313 drug overdose deaths in the same year. These rates have been increasing each year.

Fewer Arrests In Garland
Despite the growing number of deaths in Dallas County, there are frequently fewer arrests made than the state average. From public intoxication to possession and trafficking, there are regularly less arrests made than the state average year after year. This raises the question if the two sets of data correlate.
Are the fewer arrests for drug possession connected to the growing deaths? While it is impossible to say for sure, it can be said that the United States is in an opioid epidemic and there isn’t a state or city that aren’t feeling the effects of it. It is more important than ever to find help for those suffering from addiction.
